Palenquera Rib Plunge
These stunning women, selling fresh tropical fruit in their colourful dresses, are iconic characters in the Caribbean city of Cartagena, Colombia. Tourist flock to take photos with them but what most people don't know is that they come from Palenque de San Basilio, a small village outside of Cartagena, which has the incredible story of being founded by an army of escaped slaves and became the first legally accepted free town in the Americas (1612). Just like the Baiana’s with their Acaraje in Brazil, the Palanqueras became a symbol of Afro-Colombian freedom.
